Telkwa
Telkwa is a small community just east of Smithers by 18 km (11 miles) and 49 km (31 miles) west of Houston on Yellowhead Hwy 16.

Grand Trunk Pacific Railway
Situated where the Telkwa River meets the Bulkley River, Telkwa served as a service link between the coal mines located up the Telkwa River and the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. Today the CN Railway has a railway bridge crossing the Telkwa River near where a vehicle bridge goes over the Bulkley River.

Service Community
Although still very rich in coal deposits, the coal mines have closed with promises to reopen in the future. Today Telkwa serves as a service community for the outlying community of Quick towards the east on Hwy 16 and the people living up the Telkwa River and along the Bulkley River.

Main Businesses in Telkwa
The main businesses in Telkwa include a building supply store, laundromat, Midway Gas and Café, Fort Telkwa RV Park, Telkwa Pub and a grocery store. Telkwa also has a small museum located on Hwy 16 as you drive through the village.

Heritage Buildings
You can also view some heritage buildings by taking the Riverside Trail that starts at Eddy Park next door to the museum on Hwy 16. This .7 km (.4 mile) trail leads to Eddy Park alongside the Bulkley River Bridge and the Telkwa Pub.

Aldermere
You can continue on and eventually go on a trail system that goes around the Village and to the abandoned town site of Aldermere.

Downtown core
Telkwa has a number of heritage sites all within the downtown core. Some of these include descriptions of past events in relationship in Telkwa's past. Unfortunately due to a number of unfortunate events a number of these buildings have been lost or demolished during the mid-2000's including the beautifully restored Broughton and McNeil Building.

Winter Recreation
The recreation around Telkwa is great. There are excellent outdoor activities in Telkwa and close by in Smithers. In the winter you can enjoy snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing at Hudson Bay Mountain, ice fishing, snowmobiling and hockey.

Summertime Activities
During the summer enjoy endless fishing, hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking, bird watching and mountain biking along the miles of abandoned mining roads.

Tyhee Lake Provincial Park
Tyhee Lake Provincial Park is located nearby Telkwa just off the Telkwa High Road. You'll find a full service vehicle accessible campground at Tyhee Lake Provincial Park along with bird watching, swimming and a trail to Aldermere and a connection to Telkwa.

Explore around the area
There are lots of areas that you can 4x4, motocross or use your ATV. Smithers and the town of Houston are also very close by and offer excellent outdoor recreational areas. Try taking the backroad to Quick on the south side of the Bulkley River to Morice River Road near Houston.

Telkwa Barbeque
One event you might want to try is the Telkwa Barbeque. This annual event has been a Telkwa tradition for years. Put on by the local Bulkley Valley Kinsmen Club on the Labour Day long weekend in September, the event features weekend long festivities including a ball tournament, beef barbeque, horseshoe tournament and dance. Lots of great entertainment for the whole family.
