Telkwa
Telkwa
is a small community just east of Smithers
by 18 km (11 miles) and 49 km (31 miles) west of Houston
on Yellowhead Hwy 16.
Grand
Trunk Pacific Railway
Situated where the Telkwa River meets the Bulkley River, Telkwa
served as a service link between the coal mines located up the Telkwa
River and the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. Today the CN Railway
has a railway bridge crossing the Telkwa River near where a vehicle
bridge goes over the Bulkley River.
Service
Community
Although still very rich in coal deposits, the coal mines have closed
with promises to reopen in the future. Today Telkwa serves as a
service community for the outlying community of Quick towards the
east on Hwy 16 and the people living up the Telkwa River and along
the Bulkley River.
