View Royal is situated in the Capital Regional District (CRD) 8
km (5 miles) west of downtown Victoria.
West
Shore
View Royal is situated in the Western Communities or West Shore,
a commercial, business and recreation association that, besides
View Royal, includes the Highlands,
Langford, Colwood
and Metchosin. These five communities
share various services, facilities and organizations including the
RCMP, Chamber of Commerce and the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre.
Esquimalt
Harbour
View Royal is surrounded in the south by ocean waterfront along
Esquimalt Harbour and borders Saanich
in the north-east and Esquimalt in the
west at Admirals Road. In the north the community is divided in
half by the Trans-Canada Hwy 1 with Thetis Lake Regional Park with
Colwood and Langford in the west.
Dr.
John Sebastian Helmcken
View Royal is mostly made up of residential properties many with
beautiful southerly views towards Esquimalt harbour. The community
is home to the Victoria General Hospital located on Helmcken Road
which was named after one of the first pioneers, Dr. John Sebastian
Helmcken, who was a surgeon for the Hudson's Bay Company in the
mid-1800's.
Island
Hwy 1A
View Royal's main commercial zone is located along the Island Hwy
1A near the border of Colwood in the west. Here you can find a number
of car dealerships, fast food restaurants, the Great Canadian Casino
and the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre. Towards the east on Island
Hwy 1A, you can find the Fort Victoria RV Park and Campground, Four
Mile House and, at the border with Esquimalt on Admirals Road, the
Craigflower Manor and Schoolhouse plus a large Canadian Tire store.
Craigflower
Manor and Schoolhouse
View Royal has one of the area's oldest heritage buildings situated
at the Craigflower Manor and Schoolhouse. Located at the intersection
of Admirals and the Old Island Hwy 1A, the Craigflower Manor and
Schoolhouse offers the visitor a look back into time of the early
settlers, First Nations' people and the relationship of the British
Navy in the fortification of Victoria.

Royal Casino
One of the biggest entertainment attractions in the Capital Regional
District resides in View Royal at the Great Canadian Casino. Located
on the Old Island Hwy/1A, the Great Canadian View Royal Casino has
over 3,252 square metres (35,000 square feet) of gaming space offering
slot machines and a wide variety of table games including Blackjack,
Fortune Pai Gow, Mini Baccarat, 3 card & 4 card Poker and Roulette.
Entertainment
Other entertainment in View Royal besides the casino includes the
oldest public house in British Columbia which was originally built
in 1855 - the Six Mile Pub, which overlooks Mills Cove near Esquimalt
Harbour. There is also the Four Mile House on Island Hwy 1A that
offers daily meal specials and a cozy atmosphere.
Highland
Park Golf Course
For golfers View Royal has a beautiful 18-hole one at the Highland
Park Golf Course. Located off Watkiss Way on the east side of the
Trans-Canada Hwy 1, Highland Park is the latest addition to a number
of excellent courses in the Victoria region.
Portage
Park
Portage Park was traditionally used by First Nations as a portage
route from Esquimalt Harbour to Portage Inlet, then the Gorge, into
Victoria Harbour. This peaceful neighbourhood park located near
the View Royal Town Hall on View Royal Avenue provides you with
a great recreation area for boating into Thetis Cove near Inskip
Islands and Plumper Bay.
Portage
Inlet
There are also other kayaking and canoeing opportunities in View
Royal in the calm waters of Portage Inlet. Here you can find a number
of areas to go including around Christie Point down the Gorge towards
Kinsmen Gorge Park in Esquimalt.
Thetis
Lake Regional Park
If you like other nature viewing opportunities there is Thetis Lake
Regional Park one of the CRD's most used and largest park at 2,224
hectares (555.5 acres). The park entrance is accessed from the traffic
light near the Six Mile Pub on Six Mile Road. Thetis Lake offers
great swimming in the summer, fishing, canoeing, biking and walking
along a number of trails and access points.
Galloping
Goose Regional Trail
Close to the entrance to Thetis Lake Regional Park is the Galloping
Goose Regional Trail. You can either take the trail west through
Colwood and Langford or east to Saanich,
Vic West and, eventually, downtown Victoria.
RV
Camping
For RV Camping in View Royal there is nearby Fort Victoria situated
just off the Island Hwy 1A right near Helmcken Road. If this is
full, you can also try All Fun Recreation Park off Millstream Road
in Langford that offer RV camping as well.
