Elkford
Elkford is located on Hwy 43 up the Elk Valley 32 km (20 miles) north of Sparwood and the junction of Hwy 3 to Fernie.

'Wilderness Capital of British Columbia'
Known for its abundant coal reserves Elkford is also situated right in the heart of the Rocky Mountains and is known as 'The Wilderness Capital of British Columbia.'

Beautiful Mountain Views
With an altitude of 1,300m (4,265 ft) above sea level, Elkford has the notoriety of having one of the highest elevation of any town in Canada with nearby Banff in Alberta having the highest at 1,383 metres (4,537 feet). Beautiful mountain views and untouched wilderness is evident everywhere around Elkford.

Elk Valley Coal
Elkford is a small community whose work force is heavily tied to the Elk Valley Coal operations one of the world's largest producers of coking coal which is used in the steel industry. Elk Valley Coal has two mines near Elkford, the Fording River and Greenhills Operations owned by the Teck Mining Company.

Outdoor Recreation
Elkford also has other outdoor recreation opportunities close by. There is a large amount of hiking trails, snowmobiling areas, a small community ski hill plus endless cross-country ski and snowshoeing trails. Hunting is also very popular in this part of British Columbia with record size Elk being sought after.

Mountain Meadows Golf Club
For golfers Elkford has a nice little course called Mountain Meadows Golf Club. Close to town Mountain Meadows is open for visitors and offers one of the best prices in British Columbia for a round of golf.

Wildcat Days
The big celebration for you to attend in Elkford is called Wildcat Days. This event happening at the end of June has everything including parade, live music, great food and fireworks celebrating July 1st Canada Day.

Coal Mines
The Elk Valley has historically been home to various coal mines operating between Sparwood and Elkford. With a resurgence of mine operations with record exports going to China now is the best time to experience this massive operation in process.

Fording River Operations and Greenhills Operations
Fording River Operations 29 km (18 miles) away and Greenhills Operations 6 km (4 miles) away generally offers free tours during the summer months. It can fill up fast so you might want to check the tour schedule for available space and make reservations.

Elk Lakes Provincial Park
World famous Elk Lakes Provincial Park is located near Elkford giving you the opportunity to experience one of British Columbia's best back-country adventures.

Bear Country
Just remember if you are enjoying the countryside around Elkford, please remember this is Bear Country just like the rest of BC. Try to avoid the rivers during heavy salmon spawning times unless you feel comfortable with bears around. There is also the possibilities of encounters with wolves or cougars so please play it safe and practice good outdoor wildlife procedures.
