Pure
Lake
Pure Lake is located in Haida Gwaii, approximately 25 km (16 miles)
north of Port
Clements and 19 km (12 miles) south of Masset
on Hwy 16. After parking on a highway pull-out, there is a short
walk from Hwy 16 to the lake.
Warm
Water
Pure Lake is well noted locally for having some of the warmest water
of any accessible lake in Haida Gwaii. Many local kids from all
over Haida Gwaii and especially Graham Island have learned water
safety as well as how to fish, canoe, and swim at Pure Lake. Remember,
as with all BC Parks, there are no lifeguards here, so swimming
is at your own risk.
Facilities
The facilities found at Pure Lake Provincial Park include pit toilets,
picnic tables, fire-pits, and a small sandy beach. Unfortunately,
there are no camping facilities found in Pure Lake Provincial Park
and you have to pack in your own firewood and boat to the day-use
area along the lake.
Wet
and Muddy Trail
When you take the walk to Pure Lake, expect muddy conditions, especially
during wet weather. The trail starts off from the parking lot as
a well-drained, hard-packed path through trees badly in need of
thinning, but conditions change fast and the path goes through more
open grassland with mud and puddles on the trail. From the parking
lot to the lake, the trail takes about 10 minutes to complete.
Nearest
Provincial Campgrounds
If you want to camp in a provincial park, the two nearest ones are
in Naikoon Provincial Park
with Agate Beach Campground in the north, and Misty Meadows Campground
near Tlell in the south.
Bear
Country
Just remember if you are enjoying the provincial parks and the countryside
around British Columbia, please remember this is bear country. Try
to avoid the rivers during heavy salmon spawning times unless you
feel comfortable with bears around and take the usual precautions.
There is also the possibilities of encounters with wolves or cougars
so please play it safe.
